【展覧会趣旨】
この度スイッチポイントでは、2019 年 9 月 12日（木）から 9 月 28 日（土）の会期にて菅亮平の新作個展「Cube with Eye」 を開催します。
菅亮平は、美術館やギャラリーの展示空間自体を題材とした写真作品や映像作品で知られる1983年生まれのアーティストです。2017年に資生堂ギャラリー（東京）での個展「In the Walls」、2019年にはヤマモト・ケイコ・ロシェックス（ロンドン）での個展「As you see it」、またハウス・デア・クンスト（ミュンヘン）での展覧会「Debütanten 2019」に参加するなど、近年は国内外で精力的な発表活動を行っています。
国内では２年ぶりの個展となる本展は、20 世紀以降の美術館やギャラリーの展示空間として全世界的に採用された特有の建築様式であるホワイトキューブのイデア（原型かつその理想）を創出する新作「Cube with Eye」を発表します。
本作において菅は、外部と完全に遮断されたキューブ状の金属製装置を、ドイツの展示ケースメーカー「グラスバウハーン社」の制作協力に基づいて開発しました。文化財保存学や博物館学などを踏まえて、キューブ内部の温度・湿度などを一定に保つことだけに留まらず、その空間を窒素で満たすなど、可能な限り作品を劣化させる外的要素を排除した環境を構築し、その内部の様子を監視カメラを用いて観測します。本展では、制作過程のスケッチや関連資料等も展示し、switch pointの空間をいわば菅の実験室に作り変えます。
美術作品を鑑賞するための空間とは何かという問題に対して、美術と建築の二つの領域にまたがって向き合い続けてきた菅の新たな展開をぜひご高覧ください。会期中には木下史青氏（東京国立博物館学芸企画部上席研究員）と新藤淳氏（国立西洋美術館 主任研究員）とのトークイベントをそれぞれ開催し、本作に関する議論を深めます。

【Overview】
Switch Point is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Ryohei Kan, titled “Cube with Eye” from September 12 to September 28 in 2019.
Ryohei Kan is an artist born in 1983, known for his photographic and video works based on the exhibition space itself of museums and galleries. His solo exhibition “In the Walls” at Shiseido Gallery (Tokyo) in 2017, “As you see it” at Yamamoto Keiko Rochex (London) in 2019, and participation in the exhibition “Debütanten 2019” at Haus der Kunst (Munich) and so on, in recent years, he has been active enthusiastically in both domestic and overseas.
This exhibition is the solo show in Japan for the first time in two years. It will be announced the new work “Cube with Eye” which is created of idea (prototype and its ideal) of white cube, that is a peculiar architectural style has been adopted worldwide as exhibition spaces at museums or art galleries’ spaces since the 20th century.
In this work, Kan has developed a cube-shaped metal device, that is completely isolated from the outside, with the cooperation of the German museum display case maker Glasbau Hahn. Along with art conservation and museology, it not only keeps the temperature and humidity inside the cube constant, but also eliminates external elements that degrade the work as much as possible, such as filling the space with nitrogen, and its inside is observed by using a surveillance camera. In this exhibition, through displaying the sketches and reference materials of the production process, Kan will remodel the space of Switch Point into his laboratory.
Please take a look at the new development of the spread thought that he has continued to face across the two areas of art and architecture in response to the question of what is the space for appreciating artworks. During the exhibition, talk events will be held with Shisei Kinoshita (Special Research Chair, Curatorial Planning Department, Tokyo National Museum) and Atsushi Shinfuji (Researcher, The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo), to deepen discussions about this work.
